The World Economic Forum’s 2025 Risk Assessment describes an increasingly fractured global landscape, where escalating geopolitical, environmental, societal and technological challenges threaten stability and progress.
The global outlook is increasingly fractured across geopolitical, environmental, societal, economic and technological domains. There is declining optimism, deepening geopolitical and geoeconomic tensions and a growing sense of societal fragmentation. Environmental risks have escalated from long- term concern to urgent reality.
Extreme weather events are anticipated to become even more of a concern than they already are, with this risk being top ranked in the 10-year risk list for the second year running. Biodiversity loss and ecosystem collapse ranks #2 over the 10-year horizon, with a significant deterioration compared to its two-year ranking.
It’s the responsibility of all company directors to sit up and take notice: risk is your business. Protecting your shareholders’ interests demands your attention. However daunting, these risks are existential and cannot be ignored. The time to act, says WEF, is now.
