Environmental Policy Statement

Constantly looking for solutions

We are committed to identifying, innovating, implementing and sharing actions which reduce our greenhouse gas emissions and wider environmental impacts. This has so far included:

  • all electric premises on a renewable tariff with zero emissions
  • roof insulation, double glazing, door seals and draft excluders
  • instant water heaters
  • rain water harvesting
  • reduced road travel by 50% by working from home and meeting online whenever possible
  • reduced air travel by 80% since 2018
  • use of trains for long distance journeys within the UK
  • low use, high MPG diesel car
  • reduced frequency of replacing equipment
  • buying used / reboxed whenever possible
  • favouring local suppliers whenever possible
  • almost total avoidance of highly processed foods
  • separating waste at source and recycling or re-using 60% of it
  • composting food waste and avoiding chemical fertilizers in the garden
  • built a garden room office from recycled industrial packaging
  • planted 300 trees – appropriate species in appropriate locations, seen through to maturity – which on average sequester more than ten tonnes of CO2 equivalent every year.

We are continually on the lookout for new technologies, innovations and best practices we can learn from.

Steve’s personal actions include:

  • a pro bono role as a Director of the Society of Environmental Writers and Journalists
  • a pro bono role as Chairman of the Sacred Nature Initiative
  • publishing The End of the World as We Know It
  • producing the Climate Insights video series
  • as creator of the Bottle Bank glass recycling scheme, Steve can claim responsibility for emissions reductions equivalent to around 250,000 tonnes CO2 equivalent per year over 40 years since Bottle Banks began. That’s roughly as much as all the households of a medium sized city like Sheffield!

It’s not often you get the chance to create such an impact as this. What could you do to change your world?
